This was originally published in 2020 on medium.com, Alhamdulillah since then, I have earned about a million Naira thanks to all the work I found through Jiji.ng
Four years ago, or thereabouts, I became a freelance writer. I was writing for blogs, websites and small businesses, and I get paid while I am at it, it was a fun way to do all the English essay assignments I refused to do back then. Every time my android phone ‘buzzed’ indicating a message alert and I see it’s a payment for some work done, I did feel like dancing.
Jiji.ng is a classifieds site in Nigeria where you can post an ad about something you want to sell. It is one of the most popular websites in the country, and it’s a thriving marketplace for Nigerians who want to get rid of their second-hand phones. Today, you will find all sorts of products both new and fairly used, up for sale on Jiji.
One day, out of the blue, I decided to calculate just how much I have earned over time, and to my surprise, I had made over 100k through Jiji. That is 100,000 Naira worth of words I have written, I was surprised and slightly proud, to say the least. I am one-tenth of a millionaire! Except, the money was the result of several months earnings, meaning I don’t exactly have 100k sitting in my account just at that moment. But who’s counting?
My first brush with Jiji was a long time ago, long before I became a freelance writer. I posted an ad for graphic design services, and it SOLD, other ads I have posted that were also a success were my CV writing and video editing services.
Later on, I finished designing and constructing my website which sealed the beginning of my freelance career, but I knew clients won’t just magically find me through my new website because it has no real traffic, so I did the next best thing, I posted about my ‘writing services’ on Jiji, and sure enough, the calls started coming through.
From Jiji, there’s a way I redirect people to my website, most of my clients when they saw the site say it helped them made the decision to call me, but I knew Jiji did the heavy lifting.
I have introduced a bunch of my friends, my family, including a cousin who’s a makeup artist to the classifieds site. I was such a fan that one of the earliest posts I wrote and published online was about Jiji, titled “7 Tactics To Sell Better On Jiji”, it’s still a google top result.
It’s been such a long time now since I pulled that off, I still work remotely with clients from all over the world, and I am thankful to God for these blessings.
