Every year, we bid farewell to Ramadan, the blessed month, by celebrating eid ul-fitr. But before any celebrations begin, every fasting person is expected to complete the obligatory act of worship that seals his Ramadan fast, which is giving out zakat fitr.

I have simplified the zakat fitr measurements because remembering it can be a challenge sometimes. You can use the zakat fitr calculator on this page to convert one sa’a of grains (which is the prophetic standard unit of measuring zakat fitr per person) into various other local units of measuring grains in Nigeria, such as the mudu, derico cans, tin milk cups, and kilograms.

Please note, there is a difference between the Northern Nigerian mudu and the muddun an-nabi. The mudd an-nabi is another prophetic standard unit of measurement, where four mudd an-nabi make up one sa’a. See picture below for more reference.

How Much Is Zakat Fitr?

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The Messenger of Allah (SAW) made Zakat al-Fitr, one saa’ of dates or one saa’ of barley, obligatory on the Muslims, slave and free, male and female, young and old, and commanded that it should be given before the people went out to pray.” (Al-Bukhaari, 1407)

It was made obligatory for any financially able fasting Muslim to give zakat fitr, and the measurement is one sa’a of whatever staple food grain your country or culture usually eats. So, rice, beans, maize, and millet can all be given.

To answer the question, how many mudu are to be used for Zakat Fitr in Nigeria? It’s one sa’a is equal to one and a half mudu of grains. It goes for any grain you are using, the zakat fitr measurement will remain the same, one and half mudu per person.

For zakat fitr in kilograms, one sa’a is approximately 2.4-3kg of grains. These measurements are based on authentic Islamic scholarly consensus in Nigeria and around the world.

Every Muslim has to give zakat fitr on behalf of himself first, then his wife, children, newborn baby, and parents if they are under his care, and on behalf of other close relatives under his care.

Using the online Zakat Fitr calculator on this page, you can select the number of persons you are responsible for, then select the local unit of measurement most convenient to you, and hit the Convert button. The result will automatically be displayed.

It is prescribed to be given in the morning before the eid ul-fitr prayers. But one can give a day or two before the Eid.
